Goethite (HFeO(OH))

Goethite mineral specimen

A German Poet.

Goethite and Limonite are really the same mineral, hydrated iron oxide. But Goethite forms crystals, whereas limonite is shapeless.   It was named after the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It is one of the oldest known pigments, called yellow ochre, and was used in many prehistoric cave paintings.
