The Oral History Archive

oral history officer, Cyril, editing an oral history recording

Since 2002 a team of dedicated volunteers have been recording the memories and stories of people who have lived or worked in the area. We now have over 150 recordings.

Recording these stories provides a valuable historical asset for current and future generations, capturing memories that would otherwise be lost forever. When pieced together, these fragments of information give a fascinating insight into life in the community in the past. They are used in our work with schools, in our exhibitions and are available to listen to or to read the transcripts by appointment.

The themes that are covered are varied and include:

  • Growing up and going to school in local villages

  • Mining

  • Working in farming

  • Working in fishing

  • Life in St Just and Pendeen

  • World War Two

It is not just stories of miners, but includes the memories of many women who lived and worked in the local villages.

We do play some of these stories in our new museum, but it is not possible to play all of them, see the online Resource Bank for some examples of recordings.

If you would like to make an appointment to listen to anything in particular or read through the transcripts, please contact Cyril Honey or Nick Thomas on 01736 788662 or oralhistory@geevor.com or print out and post the form to request and appointment.

If you have a story or memory to share about times gone by in the local area, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact Cyril Honey or Nick Thomas on 01736 788662 or oralhistory@geevor.com
