Winder driver

winder driver

It was the job of the Winderman to control the cages and ore skips that carried men, machinery, equipment and ore up and down Victory Shaft.

The location of the cages and skips was communicated through a sequence of bell rings and so important was the work of the Winderman that no miners were permitted entry into the Winderhouse. During the day it was mainly men and equipment that was hoisted and in the evening, the cages were replaced by ore skips and the ore was hoisted to the surface.
